How to Build a WordPress Website from Scratch

I just can’t believe it!  I have finally succeeded in learning how to build a WordPress website from scratch!  🙂

Overview

What is a website?

Noun: A website is a location connected to the Internet that maintains one or more web pages.

What is web hosting?

Noun: The activity or business of providing storage space and access for websites.

Did you know that the WorldWideWeb (WWW) was created and initially released on 25 December 1990 by British computer scientist Sir Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee and it was later made open to be used by anyone in 1993? What an amazing Christmas gift had been given to the world on that day!

Since that time, numerous websites have been created for many functions in all forms and fashion, depending on the purpose for which the website was built. e.g. a personal website, a commercial website, a government website or a non-profit organization website.

But of course you know what a website is… you are looking at one right now! 😉

What many people do not realize is the significance of having a web presence and the importance of website design.

Thought of the day

You never get a second chance to make a good first impression ~ Will Rogers

I would equate a personal website as my house, a piece of virtual real estate where I can invite guests to spend time with me and I would like them to have an enjoyable experience during their visit so that they would drop by again and again.

My business website or online store would be equivalent to my office or boutique, whilst an e-commerce site would be like a display showroom where I showcase to the world the products or services that I offer, and where business dealings take place.

Hence, whilst web design is certainly important from an aesthetic point of view, there’s actually a lot more to it.

The Most Important Aspects of a Website

Before attempting to start building your website, you need to consider the following elements of a website that make the difference between a quality site and one that will not gain trust:

  1. Responsive and fast loading time
  2. Professional feel and appearance
  3. User friendly navigation
  4. Uses a Content Management System (see WordPress)
  5. Quality website content

What to avoid…

  • Slow website intros and load times
  • Boring web design/lack of color/too many colors
  • Busy or complex layouts
  • Small print that’s hard to read
  • Pop-up advertisements and flamboyant ads

Poor Web Design

Example of an unforgivable web design 😉

Putting aesthetics aside, ultimately it’s still the site content that matters.

In order to accomplish a quality website and build your virtual house or office on a solid foundation, it would be wise to leverage a framework that “simplifies” this process.  To do this, I recommend WordPress (you can build a FREE WordPress website RIGHT NOW by entering a domain in the box below)…

The Benefits of WordPress

WordPress is the world’s most widely used website framework and a true Content Management System (CMS).

With millions of users and tens of thousands of new sites being added everyday, WordPress powers 23% of the internet.

  1. Hello Sue,

That was a very descriptive article that gave me plenty of information to understand how using WordPress could help with building a website. I have waited for years to do a website, I am a little old fashion when it comes to business. You example that a website is kind of like “Virtual Real Estate” helped me to understand how impact-full it can be. I was in mortgage and real estate for 14 years (hated all 14 years).

    Thank you,

    Adam

    1. Hello Adam, thank you for your kind comments.
Yes, times have changed and though real estate is valuable, owning your very own website (a piece of virtual real estate) can be a priceless asset to your business if it’s well designed and SEO optimised.
Do stop by again if I may be of any help! 🙂
