Before you create a website, you will need to understand some basics about what is web hosting and domain name.

A domain name represents a physical point on the Internet , also referred to as an IP (Internet Protocol) address. This is a unique identifying string of numbers, like 203.219.243.27, which is given to every individual computer, server, and network on the Internet. Similar to a number on a passport or photo ID, an IP address is a unique identification number used to locate information online.

An example of a domain name, as you can see on this website is

The domain name consists of at least 2 parts – a top-level and a second-level domain.

A top-level domain (TLD) is the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot . The most common TLDs are .com, .org and .net.

So, some variations of the same example could be www.bestwealthyaffiliate.org or www.bestwealthyaffiliate.net

What is URL?

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is the address of a web page. Each page in a website will have its own unique identifier or web address (URL) on the internet in order for your computer to locate the web page that you are trying to find. An example of a

Web Hosting

Besides having a domain name, your website will require web hosting services. Such services are provided by a business that will host your website by providing storage and internet connectivity to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web.

It’s like renting a space on a computer to house your website. The host, the computer where your website files are stored, assigns an address (DNS, Short for Domain Name System, or Service or Server), an internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses for your files to your domain name so that anyone can find your website on the Internet by typing in your domain name.

I hope that the above explanation of the terms domain name, url and web hosting has given you a better understanding of how websites work.

Here are a couple of places where you can register a domain name of your own:

Namecheap.com

GoDaddy.com – World’s No.1 Domain Registrar
